Moving To Work
Linking participants to family supporting jobs

The Moving to Work Pathway provides unemployed and underemployed individuals and families with the skills and supports they need to prepare for and secure jobs that offer family-supporting wages and benefits.

Moving to Work participants receive a wide array of services, including individualized assessments, intensive coaching, job readiness training, orientation to the world of work, screenings for income-enhancing public benefits, and other work supports.  Through our unique customized coaching approach, we provide an environment that is conducive to learning and engagement that ultimately results in success for workers and their families.

We are acutely aware of the employment barriers that saturate distressed communities and we aggressively work to implement initiatives that combat these challenges. To help residents overcome the barriers preventing them from securing and maintaining employment, we offer transportation assistance, childcare subsidies, and computer literacy training.

Unlike traditional job training and placement programs, our relationship continues long after the participant secures employment. The Moving to Work Pathway coaches continue to interact with participants as they transition into work, maintain their job and take steps to advance in their career.

When Shana Smith was forced to leave her job of six years as a gate agent at the airport to take care of her disabled sister, she came to TCWFI just to prepare a resume – “but I got so much more,” she explains. The job readiness class in the Moving to Work Pathway taught her how to present herself successfully in job interviews. She learned to use a computer and manage office files. These new skills helped her secure a new job in the hotel and hospitality industry, enabling her to support her family.

With two young daughters at home, Shana continues to take advantage of TCWFI services. “When you come to The Center for Working Families, it is not a one time thing…” she explains. “You get a Pathway Coach and they coach you through your career. It is a lifetime opportunity.”
